No: 46, 4 February 2021, Press Release Regarding the Statements Made by Certain Circles Abroad on Events at Boğaziçi University

Republic Of Türkiye Ministry Of Foreign Affairs 04.02.2021

Freedom of association and freedom of expression are safeguarded by the Turkish Constitution. Our security forces, as they have done so far, will continue to fulfill their duties and responsibilities in accordance with the authority granted by the law.

It was determined that certain groups that are not from the university and are affiliated with terrorist organizations attempted to infiltrate into and provoke the events. In this respect, necessary and proportional measures are taken within the law against these illegal acts that go beyond the scope of the right to protest.

We warn these circles not to use a language that provokes groups that resort to use illegal means and encourages illegal acts. We still remember that very recently in many “advanced” democracies, security forces used disproportionate force against innocent civilians even in the face of their slightest objection against governments. We recommend to those who turn a blind eye to Turkey’s lawful acts regarding events taking place at Boğaziçi University and who intend to lecture Turkey on democracy and law to look at the mirror. No one should exceed their limits and interfere in Turkey’s internal affairs.

Turkey demonstrates its will to protect fundamental rights and freedoms guaranteed in the Constitution through the reforms it carries out. Meanwhile, Turkey is also determined to pursue its fight against terrorist organizations and groups affiliated with them who are abusing these rights and freedoms.
